Topic: Flex Living Space

What is “flex living space”? It is space that can be used for multiple purposes – like a room that is an office during the day and a bedroom at night. “Flex Space” is a term that has been used in the commercial real estate for many years. Many buildings are constructed in such a way that they can readily and easily be reconfigured for different uses. An office space might be reconfigured as a retail store. A storage area could become a shipping department.

In residential use, flex living space means rooms that can serve different purposes with a very fast conversion time. Instead of days, weeks, or more to convert a commercial flex space, consider a living space in your home that can convert from an office to a bedroom within a few minutes. Possibly, even within seconds. Yes, seriously. Seconds!

Let me give you an example of what I mean. As our kids grow up and leave the nest, we no longer keep our kids' rooms intact just in case they come home for a weekend, or so. And, often the kids have taken their bedroom furniture with them anyways. (I know that ours did.) In our case, we sold our home and purchased a different one closer to work. The old house was selected for location: it had the best schools. Now that was no longer a factor. We set up the new house differently. Instead of a dedicated guest bedroom, we opted for much needed office space. In your case, you may want to use that room for a hobby room, or a study that you have always wanted. Or, maybe you are starting a business at home and need office space.

But, what do we do when the offspring come to visit for the holidays, birthdays, or just to visit? Do we expect them to sleep on the floor, the sofa, or stay at a hotel? If your kids are in college, guess who is paying for that hotel room! And, we really do want to spend as much time with them as we can.

In our case, we used the idea of flex living space when we designed our office. We included a Murphy wall bed as part of the room. When closed, the Murphy bed looks like a built-in armoire between some pretty cabinetry. When opened, our Murphy bed has a regular mattress that provides a good night’s rest to any of our visitors.

Being an “empty-nester” is not the only reason to exploit the concept of flex living space. Do you live by yourself and have limited living space? Or, a couple that has visitors that you would like to get a good night’s rest before they make the long trip home the next day? Or, you are retired and want to invite your distant friends to stay and visit for a few days and would rather spend the money on good food and pleasant times instead of lots of hotel bills?

I have listed a few reasons for using Murphy Beds as part of a flex living space solution. I am sure you can think of a few more for your situation. I would love to hear about them. And, I would love to help you make those dreams come true.

Topic: Murphy Beds for the Holidays

It’s that time of year again. Summer is cooling off (well, a little). Fall is approaching. Soon the Winter Holidays will be here along with the friend and family visits. We all look forward to the good times. However, as the kids get older, sleeping on the floor becomes less and less comfortable. And, permanently furnishing spare rooms with beds means those rooms are virtually unusable the rest of the year.

Wish you had a magic space that was a living area by day and a sleeping area by night? And, we are NOT talking about sleeping bags and blow-up air mattresses on the floor!

We have the perfect solution for you! Wall Beds or Murphy Beds are a great way to "create" space. Matching Side Cabinets allow for extra storage, and can even double as a wardrobe armoire for your guests. Include a 24" wide side cabinet and you can add closet rod space. No need to make space in one of your closets. Your guests have their own right next to their bed.
